Are there tryouts?
Although we are a team and accumulate points towards the team each person is ultimately competing against themselves; therefore, if you try and keep trying you are on the team. No one ever sits the bench in mountain biking and every rider will participate 100% of the time.
I am new to this sport. Do I need experience?
No experience is necessary. As long as you can ride a bike we can work with you.
What if I'm not sure I will like it?
There is a trial period in the fall where you can give the team a try. We will have a couple group/fun rides with some team building activities. Look at the events calendar for more information on when this is held or email [email protected]. With that said, since mountain biking is an endurance sport, it requires some commitment over many weeks (or months) to get into shape, and this can make the difference between a very fulfilling season and a season that is less than satisfying if you do not put in a consistent effort.
What can I expect at practice?
We have several different ride groups which train at levels appropriate to the rider’s ability and experience. At the beginning of the season you will be assessed based on ability, experience and your team goals and placed in the appropriate group. Throughout the season, as you progress, you may move up in those groups with coach approval.
How do I sign up?
Visit the Register page for more information.
What do I need to have in order to participate?
You need have the desire to show up and ride with us. For weekday practices you will need a night riding light. Ask to borrow until you can get a light. Chain Gang, The Bike Shop and Sports LTD all carry night riding lights and offer a team discount. You will also need a helmet.
How many practices do I need to attend?
Our season runs January through may with state championships in May. We understand that you may be doing multiple sports or outside activities. We do not recommend fewer than 2 rides a week. Some athletes can only make one team practice a week but train on their own due to other commitments. This is important because if you only train once a week, you will find it increasingly difficult to stay with the group and your experience will become less than satisfying.
What does it cost to participate?
Club dues are $150, league registration is $150, entry fee for races $50 x 5 (May be 100% covered depending on scholarships.), race kit $60-150, and transportation to and from race venues. Please don´t let money be a factor. Please see the scholarship tab for more information.
When and where are the races?
We have 5 races and the state championship. 3 races are required in order to potentially qualify for the state championships. Participating in all 5 will earn you bonus points and better start positions. The race venues vary with Monterey being the farthest league race. Races begin in February and finish with state championships in May.
If I'm on the team do I have to race?
You are not required to race, however, if you have never raced before I suggest participating in the first race to see if you will like it. Often, after participating in a race, athletes decide they would like to continue.
I'm in junior high. Can I participate?
There is now a middle school race team. Racing is not required to be a part of the team but we do have racing available for middle school. Registration is $150 for junior high and $150 for NICA.
